Texas Pastor Charged with Throwing Neighbor’s Cat from Bridge to Its Death

Why do these things always happen in Texas?

From the Huffington Post:

Bastrop Christian Church

Bastrop Christian Church Pastor Rick Bartlett, whose sermons promise “deliverance and renewal from wrongs suffered and caused” in life, allegedly left his neighbor’s 12-year-old cat Moody in a cage in the back of his truck for three days, then chucked the pussy off a bridge where it fell 50 feet to its death on Jan. 15, according to KEYE TV.

Bartlett allegedly told animal control officers that he thought Moody was one of many stray cats afflicting his yard. He claims he captured it and put it in a cage in the back of his truck. He told officers that he forgot about the cat for three days before bringing it to police, though he denies deliberately neglecting the kitty, the site reported.

When cops noticed Moody’s name tag — with Barlett’s neighbor Sarah Bell’s name and address on it — they offered to bring it home. Barlett allegedly offered to return the feline himself.

Officers found Moody’s corpse below a bridge on the banks of the Colorado River on the same day, with a punctured lung.

Brother Rick’s alleged actions left owner Sarah Bell with the unenviable task of explaining to her 5 year-old daughter what happened to the family kitty.

Moody the Cat

“She also asked me where Moody is now and I said, ‘Baby he’s in Heaven,’” she told KVUE.com.

“She knows the man who did this is a pastor at the Bastrop Christian Church and she said, ‘I don’t believe in Heaven anymore, Moody’s just dead.’”

Seems a pastor has converted another child to freethought.

We are sorry about Moody, sweetheart. The police will find out what happened to him.

BTW- Bastrop is a charming town located east of Austin, the state capital, in central Texas where most of the law-abiding citizens are kind to animals.

That makes me sooo furious. I don’t think I should comment right now

This parent demonstrates the plebeian rationalization of most religion. To wit, in the face of cruelty, exculpation and vicarious atonement.
Bravo for the child who can reason through such nonsense.

Wait! That cat suffered, outside with no protection from the weather, day and night, nor from fireants which could crawl up there, no food, no water, no nothing, and then, the pastor took it to the authorities and then he lied to the authorities, saying he’d return it to its owner, and then he threw it off a bridge to die broken and in agonizing pain, suffociating in its own blood, all alone? This cat, who was family to humans and had humans who loved him? This cat who, even if it were a stray, feral, or even rabid and dying beast, did not deserve such brutal torture, far beyond what even the cruel aspects of nature would provide?
And the pastor walks free? Why is he not arrested? Animal cruelty. Stealing — there was proof the cat belonged to someone and there is no proof he didn’t take the cat from his neighbors’ property. Trespassing to go wtih that stealing charge.
And where is his congretation’s outrage?
    Where is the humanity?
What the bleeping bleep would Jeebus do? Shut the pain up and pretend the heart doesn’t hurt each and every animal loving person whose life is touched by this wretched exuse of a human, much less pastor?
    I am outraged!

To put in one more way, that pastor is lower than whale excrement, and that’s at the bottom of the ocean!

  8. Jason Pollard says:

Folks, please realize that Bastrop Christian Church was in no way involved with Rick Bartlett’s actions. After his arrest, Mr. Bartlett has not preached or taught on Sundays and has not represented the church in any way. He is no longer an employee of Bastrop Christian Church.
